"A Sing-along of Classic Labor Songs" (Terre Haute)

Tuesday, March 26, 2013 - 7:30pm

ISU Community Semester - A Sing-Along of Classic Labor SongsTuesday, 3/26, 7:30 – 9pm

Location:  Labor Temple

In this interactive event, instrumentalists, singers, and historians will pay tribute to the labor strife of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, a time when Terre Haute stood at the center of the national labor movement. Banjo players and guitarists will accompany vocalists as they sing “Dump the Bosses off Your Back,” “Paddy Works on the Railway,” ”Housekeepers Lament,” “The Farmer is the Man,” ”John Henry,” “Bread and Roses,” and many others. Between songs, ISU voice professor Peggy Balensuela and labor historian Lisa Phillips will share information about the music and major strikes of the era, with contextual images provided by Wabash Valley Visions and Voices. And of course, audience members will be encouraged to sing right along! Co-sponsored by WFIU.
