IU Labor Studies is co-sponsoring a talk by Prof. Isidor Wallimann,  “Urban Agriculture, Social Movements, and Food Policy Issues,” which will take place Monday, Dec. 1 at 3:00 in the Indiana Memorial Union (Sassafras Room) on the IU campus.

      His presentation will discuss the nature of the urban agriculture movement, what it means to participants and how they tend to identify with it. In so doing, the strengths and weaknesses of the movement will be addressed, including how they are reflected in movement vocabulary. Urban agriculture will also be discussed from a food policy and sustainability perspective, whereby lines of conflict following from daily practice will be identified. Throughout, Urban Agriculture Basel and other locations of practice will serve as points of illustration.

      The presentation will draw on his studies of agriculture, his sociological work on social movements, his work as a previous editor of the research annual  Research in Social Movements, Conflicts, and Change, and on his experience as the president of Urban Agriculture Basel.
